Colon cancer certainly affects the person who has been diagnosed but it also affects their loved ones as well. They are not the ones who have been diagnosed with cancer but they care a lot about them. They want to be strong and very supportive but sometimes may not know exactly what to do. Some even avoid their loved one simply because they can’t express how they feel. The last thing a cancer patient wants is pity.

Treat them like you always did, laugh with them and include them in on activities and events. If they are up to coming, they will be there but if they don’t feel well that day just understand and don’t make a big deal about it. Never exclude them and besides casually asking them how they might feel, don’t focus any conversations around their condition.

Never be afraid to ask them if you can run an errand for them, if they need any help, or even if they have children, just offer to take them for the afternoon. This support is especially important when they might not be feeling up to par. Also, let them know that if they ever need or want to talk that you would be more than happy to lend an ear. Call them often or if you live farther away, just drop a simple email and let them know you are thinking about them. It means so much.

Everyone is different when it comes to sharing their cancer and cancer related stories with others. Some may want to get into great deal while others may feel the need to keep it more private. You know what type of person that your loved one is so follow their cue and you will do just fine. Offer but don’t be too persistent, and ask them if they would like you to accompany them to the doctors.

There are literally hundreds of support groups and organizations for cancer victims to assist in dealing with the major changes in their lives and physical wellbeing. But there are also support groups and organizations that specialize in assisting loved ones with ways to offer support and dealing with how to cope. What could be a better gift then going to a few meetings, without mentioning it to your loved one as they will feel as if they have burdened you, and finding out better ways to assist the ones you love with their condition?

People experience many different emotions, fears, anxieties, and moods after dealing with cancer treatments. Not only is it important to take care of yourself physically but emotional health is extremely important too. All people deal with cancer with various coping methods. While some will attempt to act strong, almost invincible, in an attempt to protect their family and loved one, others may turn to their family and friends for support, while some may rely in their faith to pull them through.

The main thing that most deal with is the fear that the cancer will return. Cancer patients can ease some of this worry by keeping themselves informed about their health, available and upcoming treatment programs, and support groups. Talking with other survivors can be especially beneficial in the recovery process. Some may even opt to see a counselor who can help them through this difficult time. Mainly, it is best if the cancer survivor is able to express their feelings openly regardless of what they may be.

Becoming more optimistic and less pessimistic can be very helpful. It will do more for your overall well being to be hopeful rather than focusing on the worst all of the time. Many survivors of cancer have a tendency to try and direct the blame for their cancer on something or someone, even if that someone happens to be themselves.

Others tend to surround themselves with self pity, constantly wondering why this had to happen to them. It is important at this time to not focus your energy and time on issues such as those because the truth is that anyone can get cancer and it is no ones fault.

Remember that your feelings are just that, they are yours and yours alone. If you feel happy and are having a good day then great but if you feel bad or want to be left alone for the day, there is nothing wrong with that. You are in control of your life. You may not be in control of whether or not your cancer can return but you have to make yourself a promise that you will live each and every day that you feel well, to the fullest. Stay active and take care of yourself at all times and learn how to relax. You were given a second chance so make the best of it.

In regards to colon cancer, Duke’s Classification is a system that is used to categorize the severity of colon cancer. Modified in the late 70’s, this system is broken down into four categories. Stage 1 is the earliest and most treatable to stage 4 which is the most advanced stage and likely terminal.

Duke’s Classification displays the progression of colon cancer in its various forms where in stages 1 and 2 there is generally no lymph node involvement. In stages 3 and 4 there is lymph node involvement and the prognosis is grim. When the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes the chance of survival over a period determined in years is more than half. However, once the cancer has entered the lymph nodes the prognosis is less than half.

Cancer that has spread to the later stages is the most advanced. As the cancer metastasizes it quickly can spread to the liver, lungs, bones, and the brain. Many times the cancer that has not metastasized will be treated but will return in the future affecting other organs. In other words the cancer would reappear and spread throughout the other organs. It is obviously worse if the cancer has spread to other organ as dealing with just one area is much easier to treat; however, that is not always the case.

Duke’s Classification specifically embarks on the fact that later stages of colon cancer offer grave hope. Once the cancer has spread to other organs, that are vital to life, then removing them or even parts of them is no longer an option. At that point it is best to make the patient as comfortable as possible during their final time. No one can really determine exactly when that time will be except our maker. Miracles do happen and there are survivor stories that are very enlightening and inspiring to read.

This is why early detection is so crucial and can not be emphasized enough. The next time that you drive by and see a sign that says get your colonoscopy today; it might not be a bad idea to stop in.

From the early seventies until present, colon cancer has been on the incline. Colon cancer causes more cancer related deaths and follows only lung cancer. If diagnosed early on, the typical approach to curing this disease is surgery, which is very successful, if caught early. Otherwise, about half of the people with later stages of colon cancer will be fatal.

Pharmacia Corporation currently owns the market for pharmaceuticals sold for treatment of colon cancer. The number one drug used to treat colon cancer, Camptosar, is manufactured by Pharmacia Corporation, who intends on securing their billion plus dollar market with new drugs that successfully treat colon cancer. Sales are actually expected to soar. The only drawback from Camptosar is severe diarrhea.

Clinical researchers are more than hopeful that they will soon embark upon a drug or treatment that will actually prevent colon cancer. Pharmaceutical companies have even considered partnering in an even greater effort to treat colon cancer. Treatments and procedures for colon cancer have come a long way but there is still much need for improvement. More progress has been made with less invasive procedures such as laparoscopy than with medication that assists in curing and treatment of colon cancer.

Laparoscopic surgery has made a world of difference in many aspects but with colon cancer in general, the scars are much smaller and hardly noticeable, the hospital stay is much shorter, and the patient is much less uncomfortable than with previous techniques used.

So technology has advanced a long way. One characteristic that makes laparoscopic surgery so favorable is that anyone is a candidate for it. Those who are obese have had previous abdominal surgeries, heart conditions, or even diabetics are not excluded from this procedure. This has definitely become the treatment of choice.

Further research is being conducted for the treatment and possible elimination of colon cancer. There is a molecule that is being researched that has been found in a very large percentage of colon cancer patients and researchers are working on literally genetically removing this molecule which would significantly reduce colon polyps which are the main cause of colon cancer. As technology advances, researchers are certain that more effective ways to treat colon cancer are on the brink of discovery.

Don’t let colon cancer ruin your health.

A colonoscopy is a procedure that is probably the most advanced way to identify and detect colon cancer. Not only is it very effective but it gives the doctors all of the information that they will need for your diagnosis and prompt care.

Photos of colonoscopy

The day prior to the procedure, the patient will have to take a laxative to make certain that the bowel area is clean. The patient will also have to fast for a minimum of 6 hours before the test. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis and really does not take very long at all.

You should expect to be sedated while the procedure is taking place. You will be asked to lie on your side and a colon scope will be used. A colon scope is a very narrow and thin telescope. It has a very powerful light on it so that the doctor is able to get a good look around. Further, if needed, the colon scope can either suck air out of the colon or blow air into the colon, whichever is decided by your doctor.

The doctor then lubricates the colon scope and inserts it into the rectum. If necessary, he may need to blow some air into the bowel so that he can get a much clearer picture of what is going on. The images of the colon are shown on a nearby screen so that you may watch if you happen to just be sedated rather than asleep. The doctor might have to remove a bit of tissue but it is completely painless.

After the procedure the patient will rest while the sedative wears off and will need someone to drive them home. If the procedure was a bit more complicated than a normal colonoscopy, they may have to stay for a few hours and be observed for any bleeding.

The colonoscopy is a magnificent procedure that allows the doctor to receive flawless results when looking for any defects that might be occurring in the bowel and intestine area. A colonoscopy can find polyps, irregular bleeding, and tumors in great detail.

That number will affect how your doctor decides to treat your cancer.

A stage 0 means your cancer is only in the inner lining and during this stage of colon cancer it is likely that the doctor will be able to stop the cancer from spreading by performing a minor surgery to remove the tumor. With today’s technology, this procedure can be done without even making any cuts in the skin. If the tumor is too large to remove in this fashion, there is another procedure the doctor will use that is just a bit more complex.

A stage I cancer is normally treated with the doctor conducting a surgery called a resection which removes the cancer from the colon and then rejoins the remaining ends of the colon together.

If the cancer had spread to a stage II then the treatment will be more thorough as it will with each stage that it advances to. In stage II the same procedure will be used as in stage I but it will be followed up with chemotherapy and or radiation therapy. There are new trials being conducted through research right now that may further assist in treating colon cancer; however they are not available right now.

For stage III colon cancer the treatment is virtually the same as used for stage II.

Stage IV is obviously the most advanced stage of colon cancer and at this time doctors would likely incorporate stage III treatments with a combination of more advanced treatment as well. It is likely that parts of any other organs that are affected will need to be surgically removed.

Most people are not fully aware of the colon cancer treatments available. If you are diagnosed with colon cancer the doctor will conduct several tests to determine the level or what they call stage that it has developed to. Of course, as with any cancer, the sooner it is detected the easier it will be to treat. Your prognosis will depend on certain factors such as whether the cancer is just in the lining, inside of the colon, or has spread throughout the body and into other organs.

The doctor will further base your prognosis on if the cancer has caused a block in your intestines and he will want to conduct various blood tests to determine blood levels of a specific agent that runs in your bloodstream at different levels depending on how far the cancer has advanced. So prior to recommending any form of treatment your doctor will rely heavily on your general health, if the cancer has recurred, and what stage the cancer has advanced to.

Staging is what doctors refer to as the tests that are conducted to determine the stage that cancer has advanced to. You could expect the doctor to perform a CAT scan, which takes a look at the inside of the body through taking pictures and in some instances they will also inject a dye to more clearly see the organs.

The doctor will probably also want to perform a lymph node biopsy which removes some of the cancerous cells and they are viewed under a microscope. Further, expect a complete blood count (CBC). This can give the doctor much very important information by viewing your white and red blood cells and platelets. It also indicates to the doctor the levels of CEA that are in your bloodstream. CEA is released into your bloodstream from cancerous cells but also from normal cells however, in higher amounts the doctor can make further determinations based on that information.

An MRI will probably be done so that all of the cancerous cells can be viewed and a chest x-ray may be done to view the organs and bones inside of the chest. Surgery may also be scheduled to remove any tumors that may be present. These are all necessary tests that have to be performed in order for your doctor to fully understand the development of the colon cancer and treat it to the best of his ability.

You may be interested to know what are the colon cancer symptoms. Colon cancer also known as colorectal cancer usually begins in the large intestine or in the rectum. There are a few other types of colon cancer but they are extremely rare. The intestines are broken up into different layers of tissue and symptoms of colon cancer can and will vary according to the location. The layers help determine how far the cancer has spread too.

Colon cancer begins and grows very slowly which is why early screening for those persons at higher risks is so important. Because it develops so gradually it really can be detected and taken care of early on. Almost always colon cancer begins as a polyp that turns cancerous.

Again, emphasis on regular medical screenings can detect these polyps and remove them long before they can become cancerous. Although the number of people diagnosed annually with colon cancer has dropped significantly, it is still estimated that over 100,000 people will be diagnosed with it each year and just under half will be fatal.

Colon cancer in its earliest stages may display no symptoms at all. As it progresses, these are some symptoms that should have you scheduling an appointment with your doctor. If you have bleeding from the rectum or blood mixed in with your stool do not just assume that it is from hemorrhoids. Diarrhea or any change in your bowel habits, unexplained anemia, abdominal pain or tenderness, narrow stools, unexplained weight loss, or bowel obstructions should be checked immediately by your doctor.

If the doctor has any suspicions after pressing on your abdomen, he may request a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy. He may also want to perform a test called a fecal occult blood test for any detection of blood in your stool. If you are diagnosed with colon cancer, more tests will have to be conducted to see what stage your cancer has spread to.

Stages of cancer can range from stage 0 which is the very earliest stages through stage 5 cancer which means that the cancer has spread through the lymph nodes and to other organs as well. Stage 0 cancer can generally be treated by removing the cancerous cells whereas any cancer that has advanced past the stage 2 would probably always require chemotherapy.

There are some things that you can do to reduce your risk of getting colon cancer or to prevent colon cancer. Prevention is an essential component and prevention begins with regular screenings. Sometimes non cancerous polyps can contribute to colon cancer and these can be detected by a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy and they can be detected very early.

If they are detected then they can be removed and this will further act as a precaution to getting colon cancer. The good news is that if colon cancer is found early and treated early, it is one of the most curable types of cancer.

Changing your diet is also a very wise idea. Lower your fat and calorie intake for starters and also limit your meat and alcohol consumption. People who are probably at the highest risk are those who are not very physically active and have high fat and calorie diets.

Some doctors will recommend that a patient quit smoking, eliminate or significantly reduce their alcohol consumption, using aspirin, and taking vitamins can greatly reduce your chances of getting colon cancer.

Eating a low fat and high fiber diet is a good beginning in reducing your chances of getting colon cancer. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, grains, and foods that are high in folic acids. Exercise is very important and just getting healthy can again significantly reduce your chances of not only colon cancer but any illness in general.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the US alone and is can be easily detected if found early enough and easily treated as well. The deaths caused by colon cancer have dropped quite a bit in the past decade or so because of advancements in technology.

One of the main ways of detecting colon cancer very early on is through a colonoscopy. This is a painless test that is given while you are either sedated or asleep. A very small scope is used to screen the colon thoroughly and has been very effective. The scope has a camera on it and views the entire colon whereas other similar procedures only view parts of it.

Besides detecting colon cancer, your doctor could recommend a colonoscopy for other reasons as well such as unexplained anemia, for tissue that needs a biopsy, blood in the stool, and for any other suspected bowel disorder or disease.

Colon cancer can be fatal and destructive to your health. Early detection can put a stop to its devastation and save your life. Over time, research has revealed that there are certain risk factors which could increase the possibility of getting colon cancer. Some of the factors are genetic while others can be due to lifestyle habits like diet and so on. Colon cancer can strike at any age but statistics show that those who are above 50 are at a higher risk. People who have a high fat and calories diet with low fiber intakes tend to be in the high risk group.

Some folks will develop “Polyps” which essentially are non cancerous growths on the colon or rectum wall. They can be genetic and inherited but in most cases, they are not. Those with polyps have a greater tendency to develop colon cancer. When polyps start appearing and are untreated, they may become cancerous eventually.

Women who have had previous cancers such as uterine, ovarian or breast cancers fall in the high risk group. At the same time, the probability of a recurring condition is higher for previous patients of colon cancer. Family history is also another huge risk factor. If colon cancer runs within the family, the chances also increase and other family members including you are at a higher risk. The odds are increased if a suffer is diagnosed with the condition at a young age. Those with Ulcerative Colitis likewise fall in the high risk group of getting colon cancer.

People who have hemorrhoids should go for regular check ups even though the risks of getting colon cancer are not as high.

Even though research and medical science is so advanced today, medical practitioners are still clueless when it comes to singling a specific group who will get colon cancer. But they can give accurate assessment with the right factors such as family history, existing medical conditions and what we talked about earlier.

For example, those who have Crohn’s Disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease tend to have a higher chance of getting colon cancer. That said, it is not a sure thing. All it means is the possibilities and risks are higher when you take this condition into consideration.

It is advisable for everyone to go for screening for colon cancer, especially those who fall within the high risk group. Consulting the doctors for regular screenings is beneficial for early detection and prevention.
